The setting is Earth, or rather a parallel universe of Earth where technology advanced much faster, but much of history remained similar up until recent years. In this Earth's timeline, in the year 1995 a brilliant scientist named Kei Zurui that designed military-grade androids went rogue and started using them to attack the nations of the world. Her intention was to replace biological sentience with something that could be programmed into her ideal of perfection. She was ultimately stopped by a new type of android made of artificial cells, created by a Dr. Nezumi Akari. The android, named Yuri Alpha, was unable to kill Zurui, though she did weaken her forces and send her into hiding. The assault she led ended when she destroyed Dr. Zurui's experimental energy shield generator. The collapse of the energy field tore a hole in reality that flung Yuri into another dimension for several years where she made many friends, and started a family.
Yuri returned later with a group of friends when she found a way back and learned that Dr. Zurui was still alive, and experimenting with a carefully preserved sample of Yuri's cells that were left behind as the result of a previous injury. Zurui had in fact turned herself into a nanotech monster and was unleashing a virus that was converting all other biological life into monsters under her control. Zurui was ultimately defeated, and the remains of her android army was released from her programming. Some of the androids had advanced AIs that were eager to try to help rebuild the world, though there wasn't much left of it. Most of the people, plants, and animals were dead, and those that weren't had either been turned into nanotech abominations, or had mutated while resisting the virus. The vast cities had been almost totally eradicated between being consumed for raw materials, or blasted by powerful weapons.
With help from some of Yuri's friends, the androids were able to re-purpose themselves, and establish a proper base of operations to begin remaking the world. They called this place Altira, and while above ground it's a beautiful shining silver castle, below ground it's an advanced military compound complete with all sorts of equipment for surveillance and manufacturing. As the androids were preparing to engineer humanity back into existence on the North American continent, they discovered to their horror that not all of the nanotech monsters, or "Demons" as they are commonly called now were destroyed. They were actually amassing on the South American continent under the influence of a mysterious and powerful being called Gamma that was made as an experiment by Zurui from those cells harvested from Yuri. The androids ended up designing and mass-producing several different races of people in a hurry to try to fill various tactical roles, and downloaded a fictitious history spanning a thousand years directly to their minds to try to create an army that would fight fiercely, and unquestioningly. This resulted in the new army viewing the sentient androids as gods and goddesses, called the Divine Ones, and the non-sentient androids were thought of as divine servants on par with Angels which came to be known as Metal Elves.
Over the course of the ensuing battles, some very surprising things happened. One of the sentient androids called Okami had an error that ended up tricking her into believing it was possible to influence the physical world through her force of will, and the belief of others in her ability to do so. Astonishingly, this actually worked. She saved and sent the data to the other androids immediately and began teaching as many of their people how to do it as she could. This greatly helped in fighting the Demons, who proved unable to comprehend the logic that allowed it to happen, and lacked the willpower to resist it effectively.
In addition, during the final push to overcome Gamma and her demons, Yuri left the main force to fly towards a ruined skyscraper on a robotic battle transport developed during the fighting that resembled a winged unicorn (called an Alicorn now). It's not certain why she left, or what happened at this tower, but she was seen a short time later returning to the main force with a large host of dragons that cleared a path to Gamma. The exact details of the battle against Gamma herself seem to have many different versions depending on who you ask, but all agree that it was Yuri who dealt the killing blow.
Since then the Divine Ones went back to the North American continent, now called Valorin, to build new nations for the people who chose to follow their ways, though some fighting has occurred between some people, and some regions are contested "No-man's land" areas. Areas beyond Valorin have not yet been explored. The Metal Elves are primarily stationed at Altira, though some are posted to assist the Divine Ones, as well as to protect a valley in the Rocky Mountains, roughly where Colorado used to be. This Valley was first re-inhabited by Yuri and her family. Yuri took the last name of her wife, Kit Sasou, and the valley has since been called Sasou Valley. They have worked together to build a castle, and a cozy village there where they maintain a small, neutral kingdom for the sexually open-minded, and adventurous, who seek a place to live in peace.
